Modification of vibrational damping times in thin gold films by self-assembled molecular layers
The mechanical contact between a thin gold film and a silicon substrate is investigated by ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy providing quantitative values on the damping time of coherent longitudinal vibrations of the gold film. A distinct increase in damping times is observed when a self-assembled molecular layer is introduced between the gold film and the substrate. We deduce the frequency de...
متن کاملWO3 nanorolls self-assembled as thin films by hydrothermal synthesis.
We report a novel type of WO3 nanostructure, i.e. nanorolls obtained as a self-assembled thin film on a transparent conductive substrate. The mild conditions of preparation, avoiding the use of HCl, result in an eco-friendly hydrothermal method with reduced crystallization time. FESEM and HR-TEM show that WO3 nanocrystals are made of rolled nanoflakes with a telescope-like appearance at their t...
متن کاملMolecular-Level Control over Surface Order in Self-Assembled Monolayer Films of Thiols on Gold.
Long-chain omegahydroxyalkanethiols [HS(CH(2))nOH] coordinate to gold surfaces through the sulfur atom and produce ordered, hydrophilic monolayers in which the hydroxyl groups are exposed at the outer surface. Coadsorption of two omega-hydroxyalkanethiols of different chain lengths n resulted in the formation of a monolayer having a disordered surface region that was markedly less hydrophilic t...
متن کاملLow-temperature H2 sensing in self-assembled organotin thin films.
Self-assembled nanoporous tin-based hybrid thin films prepared by the sol-gel method from organically-bridged ditin hexaalkynides detect hydrogen gas from 50 to 200 °C at the 200-10,000 ppm level. This finding opens a fully new class of gas-sensing materials as well as a new opportunity to integrate organic functionality in gas sensing metal oxides.
متن کاملInvestigation of Second-Harmonic Generation and Molecular Orientation in Electrostatically Self-Assembled Thin Films
We report the observation and measurement of second-harmonic generation in self-assembled ultra thin film nonlinear optical materials using a femtosecond high repetition rate laser system. Second-harmonic intensity, as a function of the incident angle in these films, has been measured using incident p-polarized and s-polarized optical beam components. The second-order nonlinear optical suscepti...
